Masters by country
Where the masters came from
The 20 countries with the most masters of the past in the SWAN Book.
Country of citizenship, from Wikidata, as of October 2026. Historic states are grouped under today’s country where the link is clear, for example the Kingdom of Prussia under Germany. Empires and unions that covered several of today’s countries, such as the Russian Empire or Austria–Hungary, are shown on their own. An artist with more than one citizenship is counted in each. 25,746 masters have no country recorded.
Masters of the past are painters, sculptors, printmakers, draughtspeople, engravers, illustrators and ceramicists who died more than 70 years ago, so their work is now in the public domain. They are included as a tribute and a point of reference, not as members. Their names and dates come from Wikidata, a free and open knowledge base.
Reviewed members are living artists who applied, were reviewed and accepted their grade. Read about the grades and how to apply.
